In short
In e-Boks, you can receive digital mail from, for example, banks, insurance companies, pension providers, or other private companies. You can also read mail from public authorities.
As a general rule, companies can send you mail in e-Boks when two things are true:
-
They can identify you as the recipient
This means the company must be able to confirm who you are. Usually this is because they know your CPR number, but it can also be, for example, your address, email address, or mobile number. - They have a valid reason to send you mail
This could be because:
- you have agreed to receive mail from them (for example as part of an agreement or customer relationship), or
- you have signed up for the company as a sender in e-Boks, or
- the company has an agreement or legal basis that allows them to send you digital mail.
You can usually choose which companies you want to receive mail from in e-Boks. In some cases, you cannot unsubscribe from a company if it’s necessary for an agreement you have with them, or if they are allowed to send you mail by law.
Public authorities send Digital Post to all citizens aged 15 and above. If you want to be exempt, you can read more at borger.dk. e-Boks only shows your public-sector mail — e-Boks does not administer it. Any questions about mail from public authorities should be directed to borger.dk.

What information can a sender use to send mail to me?
You can receive digital mail from a company in e-Boks.
Instead of sending you a physical letter, the company can send messages to your digital mailbox.
To do that, the company uses information about you from your customer relationship.
CPR number (standard)
Most commonly, the company knows your CPR number. Then they can send mail directly to your e-Boks mailbox.
Your address
A company can use your address to send messages to your digital mailbox - but only if you have given e-Boks permission to retrieve your address.
How to give or withdraw your address consent:
In e-Boks in a browser
- Log in to e-Boks.
- Go to Menu → Settings → Consents.
- Give or withdraw consent: “Receive mail based on your home address”.
In the e-Boks app
- Log in to the e-Boks app.
- Go to Profile → scroll down to Settings → Consents.
- Give or withdraw consent: “I consent to e-Boks processing my CPR number to retrieve my address information”.
Your email address or mobile number
Companies can send you mail in e-Boks if they know your email address or mobile number.
Some companies don’t have your CPR number, but they do have your email or mobile number from your customer relationship.
In e-Boks, you can add your email and mobile number under your profile details. If your details match the company’s, they can send mail to your digital mailbox.
You will not receive ads or newsletters in your digital mailbox. e-Boks only allows companies you know (for example through a customer relationship) to send you mail — even if they don’t have your CPR number.
Remove permission for companies to send mail based on email address or phone number
If you don’t want companies to send you mail based on your email address or phone number, you can do one of the following:

Subscription and your acceptance
In addition to having your information, companies may only send you mail in e-Boks if you have accepted it. This can happen in two ways:
1) Indirectly via the company
Your acceptance can be part of your agreement with the company. For example, it could be part of your employment contract (where payslips are sent in e-Boks), or part of your bank’s or insurance company’s terms. Contact the specific company directly if you are unsure.
2) Directly in e-Boks
For some companies, you need to sign up for them as senders in e-Boks. Most can be added automatically with one click, while some senders require manual subscription.
See which senders have sent you mail in e-Boks:
In e-Boks in a browser
- Log in to e-Boks.
- Go to Menu → Subscriptions → My senders.
In the e-Boks app
- Log in to the e-Boks app.

Frequently asked questions
Why is a specific sender sending mail to me in e-Boks?
Because you have a customer relationship or an agreement with the sender and you have accepted receiving mail in e-Boks — or because their terms require them to send digital mail via e-Boks.
Keep in mind that debt collection and other outstanding amounts are often handled by a third party (meaning not a company you recognize). Contact the specific company if you have questions about why you are receiving the mail.
How can I see which information the sender used (address, email, or mobile) to send me mail?
For mail you have received from private companies, you can do the following in the Mail from companies tab:
- Select the message you want to check
- Click More in the action menu → choose Information. Here you can see the “Identification method”.
If “Identification method” is not shown in the window, the mail was sent based on your CPR number, which is the standard for the vast majority of documents you receive.
Mail you receive from public authorities does not use these details in e-Boks. If you are unsure why you are receiving mail from a public authority, contact borger.dk or Digital Post support.
Will I receive ads or spam in e-Boks if a sender sends me mail based on my email address?
No. e-Boks is used for secure mail from companies you have a relationship with. This permission simply allows known companies to send you mail via e-Boks even if they don’t have your CPR number.
Can I unsubscribe from mail from a specific company that sends me mail?
Yes, you can unsubscribe from mail from a company in e-Boks, but some types of mail may be part of a customer or employment relationship (for example payslips) and must be agreed directly with the company sending the mail.
Start by turning off Automatic subscription:
In e-Boks in a browser
